Director of Student Ministries
Yvonne accepted the call to ministerial service at an early age, beginning with caring for the babies of the church while the members participated in service. Over the years, she has served in several leadership and teaching capacities. Her training began under the leadership of pastors C. W. Stewart and the late Bishop Thaddeus D. Iglehart in San Antonio, TX. She taught Sunday School and Bible Study, beginning with children, youth, and progressing to the entire church body.
She entered the United States military, serving 5 years, completing stints in South Carolina, New Jersey, and Oklahoma. Returning to her home state of Texas, Yvonne began her radio ministry with KCHL Gospel 1480 Radio, where the ministry carried her into local churches serving as Worship Leader, Mistress of Ceremony, and guest speaker, all while continuing to serve under Bishop Iglehart.
Seeing the need and sensing a higher call from God to leadership, Yvonne pursued and obtained her Bachelor Degree in social work, Master in counseling, and currently in a second-year pursuit of a Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth. She currently serves as the Director of Student Ministries at New Covenant United Methodist Church in Sunnyvale, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor Dana Norton.
Yvonne’s background and experience with young people goes back to her days as a youth. While she is aware that attending church services is important, she is aware that the young people are not very active beyond that. While at New Covenant, she hopes to enhance the spiritual lives of the young people by sharing God through love and service. She carries the belief that young people, being an integral part of the church, need the opportunity to experience the work of Christ if they are to grow in their faith. Church leaders need not talk about missions and expect our young people to understand. They need to experience mission first hand, and while church mission trips are great, they should not be the only events that children are involved in.
In a world where people are concerned with that which only benefits them and their circle, Christ is calling for His people to serve. Yvonne’s passion and desire is to instill a sense of servanthood in the children and youth of New Covenant UMC. This service will be demonstrated through local outreach ministries to the homeless and nursing homes. She believes that having the young people serve in their local church, outreach, and mission trips, will allow the young people to follow Jesus and be full members of the church, and that discipleship is possible at any age.
