Counting The Costs
Jesus seems intent on clearing the crowd. In today’s church we lose focus when we focus on the numbers. Big numbers mean big success. We either join the entertainment industry or we stay stuck in the past for fear of losing those who are still here. Either way, we bank on cheap grace to keep the doors open rather than challenging ministry that stretches us beyond our comfort zones. How many of us are in church leadership because we were raised in the church? Yes, we’ve been baptized, attended confirmation classes. At some point we made a profession of our faith. But when have we struggled with our faith, with our commitments, really struggled? Are our commitments easy? Do we commit too little?
